Economics of a Household

Budgeting for a household is never easy, do you cut things that you want out to meet the budget or do you not buy the thing that you want to keep the budget in control?  How do you plan for those unexpected expenses that don't seem like a big deal but can blow your budget to smithereens?

Let's look at the little things that impact the budget.  Take cable TV for instance.  Do you want all the sports channels?  That costs extra.  Do you want all the movie channels?  That costs extra.  Do you want just basic cable?  The kids will have a fit.

How about summer activities.  How much does it cost to golf everyday?  How about a pool pass for the kids?  How often will the kids want to "go to the mall" with their friends which means you aren't going to send them without any money!  The house needs some repairs and the weather is great so you want to get them done, did you budget for it?

Many people have never done a budget in their life.  When will schools learn that part of math should be the basics of teaching students how to make a budget?  Or, if not the math class (which would make sense to me since everyone has to take math) then the economics class.  It seems to me that having the students learn to budget would be a good use of a couple days of class time.
